The Dance of "NO"
There's a dance-factor here.
"No" can be the beginning of a beautiful dialogue!

Workshop led by: Melinda Zipin and Max Rivers
When: fall 2008
Time: 10am-4:30pm
Where: TBA
Cost: $75 to $50 sliding scale
Info and Registration: melinda or call Melinda at 215-531-3131. We'd love for you to join us!
This interactive, move-around workshop will include LOTS of mutual support, learning and fun:
  • How to find the "Yes" in someone's "No"
    • Everything we do, we do to meet a basic human need. So when people say No to us, they are saying Yes to an unmet need of theirs.
    • We will practice discovering this. It is incredibly empowering.
  • "No" isn't the end of the conversation, it's the beginning of the negotiation.
    • We will ask questions to clarify what the other person's (or organization's) unmet need is.
    • "Connection before negotiation."
    • We will practice staying in dialogue with the person - using the NVC Dance Floor with partners.

Max Rivers, along with his wife Elise, are pioneering the use of a combination of NVC and mediation to help committed couples work through their differences and learn to communicate constructively.

Max was the Director of the Boston Men's Center for 15 years.

Evening course open to the public in October:

  • Speaking Peace
A 4-session course on Wednesday evenings October 1, 8, 15 & 29 in NW Philadelphia, offered through Mt. Airy Learning Tree.

Many of us want to make peace in the way we live day to day. Yet we can find ourselves talking and thinking in ways that just aren't aligned with our values. This course gives tools - and practice time -  in Speaking Peace. With practice we can, as Gandhi said, be the change we wish to see.

This course will draw on Marshall Rosenberg's Nonviolent Communication® and his book Speaking Peace (see www.cnvc.org).

As women, we are expected to care for others. Often, we support others in reaching their dreams. Now it is time to support each other in reaching our dreams. We will deal with real challenges, real resources, and real options. We will address:

  • People we care for and devote our resources to - children, parents, others
  • Work issues
  • Friends and supporters
  • Our own values -
    • What do our actions tell us about our real values?
    • Which of those do we wish to cherish and affirm?
    • Which do we want to lovingly discard?

Evening courses open to public in November:

  • Cultivating Self Trust
A 2-session course on Wednesday evenings November 5 & 12 in NW Philadelphia, offered through Mt. Airy Learning Tree.

The poet Emerson said, Self trust is the first secret to success. How do you build self trust in an authentic way? We'll try out and reflect on two approaches to building self trust. Based on principles of Kashmir Shaivism and Appreciative Inquiry, they are eminently practical.

If you resonate with these principles, you may find a shift in the quality of your daily life.
